Choose a naming pattern

Decide one naming pattern before renaming a group of files. Keep the original contents intact.

Name the purpose, item, and date

  1. Choose the document’s purpose, such as purchase receipt or service invoice.
  2. Add the nickname or model that distinguishes its connected record.
  3. Add the source date in a consistent YYYY-MM-DD format when known.
  4. Keep a version note for a corrected or replacement document.
  5. Search one title and verify it returns the intended entry.

Test one recognizable title

A fictional title such as Northmoor service invoice 2026-08-14 communicates the item, purpose, and date.

Do not invent a source date

An unknown date should stay unknown. A renamed file does not change its issue date, validity, or contents. Avoid putting full serials in names you may share.

Keep the connected record.
